Parkrun is a volunteer lead organisation that is helping get people off the couch and into running shoes all over the world. It's something I've been taking part in for years and would recommend to anyone who's looking for a free way to get fit with a lot of like minded individuals.

Parkrun in itself is a free, timed, 5k run in local parks. They are open to everyone regardless of ability and are so easy to get involved in. You just register on the website and, print out your personal bar code and use that to take part in any of the Parkruns worldwide!

Parkrun was set up in 2004 in London by a group of runners, and happens every Saturday morning in local parks, beaches and promenades. All organised by volunteers. It doesn't matter how fast you are, or what you are wearing. The parkrun family is all about community and inclusion.

It attracts runners from all aspects of fitness, from the speedy athletes achieving it less than 20mins to the casual walkers taking the opportunity to get in an hours walking on a Saturday morning. It really doesn't matter! You get parents with their buggies and owners with their dogs on leashes too (park dependent). Kids can take part too, but there are often 2k junior parkrun events too.

Locally in Nottingham we have Forest Rec, Colwick Park, Gedling, Clifton, Rushcliffe, Beeston, Bestwood Village, and Long Eaton. In Chelmsford we have Chelmsford Central, Billericay, Great Notley, Maldon Prom, Basildon, Brentwood, and Hockley Woods. They are opening more as they get more popular too, so keep an eye out for new ones. They happen all over the UK and 17 other countries worldwide, so you can even take part when you're away from home too! All you have to do is be there on time and bring your unique barcode with you. When you go over the finish line they will scan your barcode and your results will then be published later that day. They keep track of all your times, letting you know when you hit a personal best or when you achieve a certain number of runs, to help you celebrate your success! It's an amazingly encouraging collective to be a part of.

If you are considering starting up the coach to 5k programme, or just want to start getting out of the house more, it's a great place to go. You will soon make friends and it will never cost you a thing! Whether you're a runner, jogger, walker or a mixture of all 3, it's an ideal atmosphere to both challenge you and not overwhelm you!
